A little hello.

Hiya,

One million lovely letters is something I’ve been working on since I was eleven. Ever since Ms Wrights Science Class in Year 7 I have been leaving people notes. In between text books, on buses, in libraries and as I got older in pubs, restaurants and as I got a little older in doctors surgeries and hospital beds – anywhere I thought that maybe someone might need a little bit of cheering up, reassurance or just a reminder that actually they are pretty lovely.  It’s never been a “thing” – just something I’ve done. I think everyone deserves to know that they are thought of and they are loved. Even if it is by a complete stranger.

This is where my idea for One Million Lovely Letters has come from. Although I hope every little note I’ve left someone, somewhere has reached someone who needed it – I’m pretty sure some may have fell too far down the side of the bus seat. In the UK alone there are 62,641,000 people, in the whole wide world there are 7,038,044,500. The average person has 3 close friends and 19 “mates” so take that off and you are still left with seven billion thirty-eight million forty-four thousand four hundred and seventy eight strangers.  And all of those strangers have at least one day where they could use a little lift.

So this is a call out. To every other person  on the planet – I’m going to write you a letter. A letter just to make the day a bit better or to remind you of the bloody amazing stuff about you that you’ve forgotten because we all forget once in a while.

If you would like a letter you can email me at : onemillionlovelyletters@gmail.com
Please include your address and the reason why you need a little lift and I will send you a little hug in an envelope.

Love,

Jodi x

  1. I love that you are doing this in my hometown. I hope I get a note in some random way when I really need it.

  2. I’m from Birmingham originally and have lived In Bournemouth for two years. As much as I love it I’ve not built the strong friendship group I had back home so sometimes I get a tad sentimental and a bit sad. I think what youre doing is ace, it’s a shame there’s not more people like you! X

  3. You sent me a letter when I needed it and I use it as a bookmark in my diary. I just watched this video and wept. I needed it.

  9. Heard you being interviewed on Radio 2 this afternoon and thought what a lovely thing to do. I’m going buy your book without delay. Looking forward to reading it. Anyone who spreads a little happiness in this world gets my admiration. Well done you.

  10. You speak of everyone else in the world so beautifully, but never forget you have that yourself. the spark in your heart I saw in that video was the brightest I think I’ve ever seen displayed so honestly and so publicly. I hope it encourages more people to stand up and be as wonderful as that with their words fuelled by their hearts; people like you, or people like themselves who do things like you, are what the world needs!

  11. *tissues required* for TEDx talk. You are a beautiful person Jodi with endless inner strength and sheer bravery X thank you for doing what you do in helping others.

I’ve been close to the curbside on and off in life with many losses, family illnesses & redundancies but I’ve been to it far too many times since this; http://www.roadjustice.org.uk/Sarah-Charlotte (still in recovery 20 months post RTC). Got to keep fighting though right…?

  12. I have just finished reading your book and lets just say you seem like a lovely lady. You have probably heard this over and over but what you are doing is fantastic. Your very brave and to take on others problems aswell as having your own is very thoughtful and to see you are from where I am makes me feel good knowing that there is decent human beings like you out there 🙂 I am glad you have been regonised and you have the love and support to keep going. Keep doing what your are doing, if anyone is amazing its you xx

  13. Jodi Ann Bickley, what a wonderful way to give an example on how to show love to one another. Letter writing has always been my hobby. Not the email way, but with a ball point pen an paper and an envelope. During World War II the greatest way to boost a serviceman’s morale was to send him a letter. I wasn’t getting any mail, a friend said to me I will give you some addresses, then you can write letters to your hearts content. I began writing to all the people my friend gave me addresses for. I always received wonderful letters back. My motto is, you want to receive a letter, write a letter. If you don’t write you are wrong.
I would rather receive one written letter over a hundred emails. And please don’t call postal mail, snail mail. The symbol for the United States Postal Service is an Eagle. Eagles fly higher than any other bird and can gaze directly at the sun.
Now there is where penmanship comes in.

  14. Thank you for what you do, it takes a very special person with a special talent to connect the way that you do to one and all regardless of their situation. Keep it up and may the sun shine on you always!
